Chateau Batailley
This is a Chateau almost completely ignored by the speculative market who flock like moths around more chichi labels such as Pichon-Lalande and Lynch-Bages, both of whom are more adept at marketing their wines.
The estate includes some 60 hectares of vineyard on an undulating bed of deep gravel and a subsoil of clay and hard sandstone, planted with 70% cabernet sauvignon, 25% merlot, 2% petit verdot and 3% cabernet franc (the petit verdot was phased out by Emile Casteja but appears to have been reintroduced by Philip.) Density of vines is 8,000 per hectare with an average vine age just over 30 years.
